The Foundation views education as a tool for poor people to improve their economic condition. Thus, the Foundation funds scholarships to help underprivileged students that are likely to contribute to economic and social justice so that the funding of their education would have a multiplier effect. It would not only help the student receiving the scholarship work herself/himself out of poverty, but it may also make it possible for the recipient to help improve the situation of others by actively engaging in economic and social justice issues. With this in mind, the students funded by the Foundation’s scholarships must not only demonstrate economic need and an excellent academic record, but they also must demonstrate a passion to contribute to humanity, evidenced by a consistent involvement in organizations and projects that actively fight poverty, hunger, and/or injustice.
The Foundation for Economic and Social Justice’s annual scholarship assists qualified students to pursue a bachelor’s degree in any field of the student’s choice. This scholarship can be renewed for subsequent years as long as the student remains enrolled in the university in good standing and continues to meet the Foundation’s eligibility criteria. The amount of the scholarship is up to $7,000 per year, depending of the student’s financial circumstances.
Thus far, we have awarded twelve scholarships. The recipients of these scholarships are very promising individuals. They come from households with very limited financial resources, and each one of them had to overcome extreme circumstances to pursue their dreams and aspirations. Although each one of them is a very unique individual, they all share some common characteristics with each other: determination, resilience, persistence, and a passion to help those in need.
